The Bite

Yet by far one of the most horrifying parts of the werewolf is the fact that even if you survive the attack, there is a very good chance you will fall prey to the exact same inner demons. For all it takes is a single bite and you will share your attacker's fate; helpless to stop themselves from tearing apart others during the night of the full moon. All of your intelligence, logic, and reason and to completly succumb to the same madness and lose control over our base instincts. It is this, more than the fear of death that makes us truly fear werewolves. It can even cause a normal person to exhibit behavior that they would otherwise never engage in like Bill Neil from The Howling . After his girlfriend, Karen White, is almost raped by a serial killer, she is so tramatized about the experience she is reluctant to have sex. Bill Neil is more than patient with this and while he does try to gently intiate sex, he always stops when she tells him no, even if he does become more frusterated by this over time. After moving into The Colony, he even pushes away the advances of Marsha Quist. For although he is tempted, he refuses to cheat on Karen despite his growing frusterations. However, Marsha Quist bites him, turning him into a werewolf and thus, Bill's inner demons come out as the moon becomes full and the two of them transform, turning into werewolves and making love to one another (see below).

Despite the fact that Bill has shown that he is more than able to control his sexual urges before, one bite and his frusterations boil over. For the bite of the werewolf shows to bring out the most animalistic urges within us, the hidden pains and frusterations and bring them bursting out with one full moon. In many respects, this proves that the bite isn't something entirely external. Yes, there is the supernatural element of the curse, but in this depiction it becomes clear of one thing: the wolf exists in every single one of us. All the curse does is bring out your internal struggles, the animalistic side of you that you like to hide, out on specific nights. When someone succumbs to the curse they aren't imprisoned but freed in a sense. Freed to let out the darkest parts of themselves, the parts that they want to hide, the parts that society teaches you to keep at bay, and brings them out to the world free from the day to day restrictions of decency, humanity, and expectations. Bill's sexual frusterations were always going to be there, but it was the curse that brought it out for everyone to see.
